Mom Goes After Lion Cub That’s Washed Away in Flooding River


 

A lion cub is swept away in a flooding river, swimming desperately to reach its mother. Just as it nears her, it’s caught again by the powerful currents. This time, the mother lioness springs into action, swimming after her cub and rescuing it from drowning.

Callum Robertson, a 28-year-old guide at Sabi Sands, captured this rare moment on camera and shared it with LatestSightings.com. His team had been searching for these lions, knowing roughly where they were. Eventually, they found the lion pride on the other side of a raging flood.




Lions usually avoid water and only swim when necessary. So, it was surprising to see the cubs attempt to cross the treacherous river. The scene was tense—one of the guests couldn’t watch and turned away in nervousness. As the cubs crawled out of the reeds, they made their way into the turbulent waters, risking their lives.

While the mother managed to swim across and rescue one cub, the second was caught in the current and swept away. The team watched anxiously as the tiny lion struggled to stay afloat. Miraculously, the cub swam back toward its mother, battling the strong flow.

Without hesitation, the lioness plunged into the water and made a heroic rescue. She swam across, reaching her struggling cub and bringing it safely to shore. This dramatic moment showcased the incredible maternal instincts and resilience of lionesses, who fiercely protect and nurture their young even in the face of danger.
