On January 28, three Sumatran tiger cubs—one male and two females—were born at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park’s Tull Family Tiger Trail to proud parents, Teddy and Joanne. Since their arrival, animal care specialists have been closely monitoring the cubs, checking their weight and tracking their healthy development. On February 16, all three received their first wellness exam from Park veterinarians, who confirmed that the cubs are thriving under the attentive care of their mother, Joanne.

As the cubs grow older, guests will eventually have the chance to see them exploring their habitat at Tiger Trail. In the meantime, visitors can view 5-month-old Sumatran tiger cub, Suka, who is already displaying natural tiger behaviors in Exhibit A.

With the birth of these new cubs, the Safari Park is now home to 10 Sumatran tigers. Fewer than 350 of these critically endangered animals remain in the wild, and their numbers are continuing to decline. Without effective conservation efforts, experts warn that Sumatran tigers could vanish from their native habitat in Sumatra within a matter of years.

These tigers face a range of threats in the wild, including habitat loss and human-wildlife conflict. However, the most serious danger remains poaching, driven largely by the illegal trade in tiger body parts used in traditional medicine. Individuals can support tiger conservation by avoiding products that contain unsustainable palm oil—a major contributor to habitat destruction—and by refusing to purchase items made from endangered wildlife.
