Two Good Lion Sightings at Mala Mala Camp

While Kathy and I were in South Africa recently, we were fortunate to experience two unforgettable lion sightings at Mala Mala, located within the renowned Sabi Sands Private Game Reserve near Kruger National Park. This region is famed for its abundant wildlife and intimate safari experiences, and our time there certainly lived up to its reputation.

Our first sighting was incredibly special—a lioness with her two very young cubs, nestled in the thick brush. The cubs had only recently opened their eyes, but were already full of curiosity and energy, clambering over one another and exploring their surroundings with playful enthusiasm. It was a rare and tender moment to witness such young lions in their early days of life. We captured a short 3-minute video that offers a glimpse into this touching interaction between mother and cubs, highlighting the gentle side of these powerful animals.

The second sighting was an entirely different, yet equally captivating experience. We encountered a coalition of three male lions, moving together with a quiet confidence and strength that was awe-inspiring. These males did everything together—walking, resting, and patrolling their territory as a unified force. Their bond and synchronicity were remarkable to observe, offering a powerful contrast to the delicate family moments we had witnessed earlier.

Throughout our safari, we were expertly guided by David C. Rogers from Cape Town, whose knowledge, patience, and passion for wildlife added tremendous depth to our experience. His ability to track and interpret animal behavior enriched each encounter and ensured we didn’t miss a single moment. These lion sightings will remain etched in our memories as some of the most profound wildlife experiences we’ve ever had. South Africa’s wild heart truly came alive for us at Mala Mala.
