At Asahiyama Zoo, a heartwarming chapter in the lives of its African lions began in the spring of 2022, when the male lion Orito and the female lion Io started living together. Their meeting marked the coming together of two lions with different backgrounds. Orito had arrived earlier, moving to Asahiyama Zoo from Kiryugaoka Zoo in Gunma Prefecture in 2018. Calm and dignified, he gradually became a familiar presence to visitors. Io, on the other hand, came from Tobe Zoo in Ehime Prefecture in 2021, bringing new energy and curiosity to the zoo’s lion enclosure.

After they began cohabitating, Orito and Io quickly formed a strong bond. Their compatibility soon led to joyful news. On September 12, 2022, just a few months after they started living together, Io gave birth to three healthy female cubs. The cubs were named Fu, Rei, and Ito, and they became the first offspring of Orito and Io. Their birth was a significant and exciting event for the zoo, drawing attention from both staff and visitors.

As the cubs grew, they captured the hearts of many with their playful behavior and close relationship. Fu, Rei, and Ito were often seen tumbling around together, exploring their surroundings, and staying close to their parents. Watching the three sisters interact as a family highlighted the strong family bonds among lions and offered visitors a rare and touching glimpse into their natural behavior.

The presence of Orito, Io, and their cubs brought warmth and vitality to Asahiyama Zoo. Their story not only delighted visitors but also helped deepen understanding and appreciation of lions and wildlife conservation. Through this lion family, the zoo created memorable experiences that continue to charm people of all ages.
