Couple Hear ‘Bear’ In Forest And Find A Mama With 11 Newborn Babies
Recently, a woman and her husband were visiting their winter home in Interlachen, Florida, when they heard a strange growling sound echoing from the palm forest behind the house.
The couple tried to investigate, but the sun had already set, making it difficult to see clearly.
“They initially thought … that it was a bear,” Nala Sanctuary director and treasurer Nikki Kell told The Dodo.
The following morning, aided by daylight, the couple searched the forest again. This time, they found the source of the noise — a starving black Lab and her 11 newborn babies.
“[The puppies] were scattered in several piles throughout the forest,” Kell said.
In need of expert help, the couple began contacting local rescues, including Rocky’s Refuge Cat Rescue, who relayed the information to Nala Sanctuary.
Rescuers rushed to the scene and enticed the mama into their arms with tasty treats. Their hearts broke as they realized just how skinny she was.
“It was evident that she had been on her own for a very long time,” Kell said. “[She] had a rear back leg injury, but a very sweet demeanor. [She was] very untrusting of us, for good reason.”
Team members moved the mama and her babies to a warm barn nearby where they could rest and recuperate. They began looking for a foster home and soon connected with Judy, of Moonshine Kennel, who agreed to take the whole family. Safe in her new home, the mama pup could finally relax.
“[Mama lay] down with her babies, and you could see that she was relieved,” Kell said. “She fell asleep wagging her tail as her babies nursed.”
Rescuers named the mama dog Sarah. These days, Sarah and her babies are safe at the kennel, looking forward to a brighter future ahead.
“Today, Sarah is caring for 11 beautiful babies,” Kell said. “[W]ithout our help, [they] certainly would not have made it another day.”
