First Day! White Lion Cubs Now On Exhibit after a 110 day inside den period


 The Metro Richmond Zoo is thrilled to share some exciting news with animal lovers and visitors alike—three beautiful white lion cubs are now officially on exhibit! These rare and stunning cubs have already captured the hearts of everyone who has come to see them.

Their mother, Xonga, gave birth to the trio on April 2nd, 2018, following a 110-day gestation period. The cubs consist of two females and one male, each with their own unique personality beginning to shine through. From playful wrestling matches to curious exploration of their surroundings, the cubs are growing stronger and more active each day.

White lions are especially special due to their rare coloration, which is caused by a genetic trait known as leucism. Unlike albino animals, white lions still have normal eye and skin pigmentation, but their pale fur gives them an almost magical appearance. Seeing three healthy white lion cubs together is a rare and memorable experience for visitors of all ages.

Since their birth, the zoo’s dedicated animal care team has been closely monitoring the cubs to ensure they are healthy and thriving. Xonga has proven to be a caring and attentive mother, keeping her cubs safe while also allowing them the freedom to play and develop important skills. Now that they are strong enough, they are ready to meet the public and explore their outdoor habitat.

Guests visiting the zoo can watch the cubs tumble, chase each other, and occasionally attempt tiny roars that hint at the powerful lions they will one day become. Their playful energy and adorable antics make them a must-see attraction.
