What Happens When a Lion Cub Pushes Dad's Buttons?
In the golden warmth of the afternoon sun, a cheeky little lion cub named Kito was feeling especially playful. The tall grass of the savanna swayed gently as he crouched low to the ground, eyes wide, ears perked, and tail twitching with excitement. His target was not a gazelle, not a butterfly, but something far more interesting—his father’s tail.
Kito’s father, the great lion Mako, was resting peacefully under the shade of an acacia tree. His massive paws were stretched out, his golden mane rippling slightly in the breeze. Every now and then his long tail flicked lazily back and forth.
To Kito, it looked exactly like a moving toy.
Pounce!
The cub leaped forward and grabbed the tail with both paws. Mako’s eyes opened slowly. He glanced back at the tiny bundle of fur clinging to his tail, gave a low rumbling sigh, and flicked it free. Kito tumbled into the grass, giggling in his cub-like way.
For a moment, everything was quiet again.
Then—pounce!
Kito attacked the tail a second time. This time he bit it gently and kicked it with his back legs like it was a wild snake. Mako’s ears twitched. The big lion lifted his head and gave Kito a look that clearly meant, Enough.
But Kito was not finished.
A third time the tail swished, and a third time the cub launched himself at it with all the determination of a mighty hunter. He rolled, wrestled, and chewed until—
“GRRRRUMPH!”
Mako stood up with a deep rumble that vibrated through the ground. Kito froze, paws still wrapped around the tail. His father turned his big golden eyes toward him.
For a long moment, neither moved.
Then Mako gently scooped the cub with one giant paw and plopped him on the grass.
Kito blinked, surprised.
Mako’s tail flicked again… but this time far, far away from the mischievous little hunter.
