In the wild, lionesses are usually very protective of their cubs, but sometimes aggressive behavior happens. A lioness mother may stomp, bite, or swat at her cub The cub is weak or sick – mothers sometimes reject cubs they sense won’t survive.

Stress or aggression spillover – after fights with other lions or predators, she may redirect aggression toward her cubs. Discipline – rough handling (like swatting or pinning down) can look harsh, but it’s often a way of teaching cubs boundaries. Competition – in prides, females may attack cubs that are not their own.
